With recent news about Triple E and West Nile Virus, it’s more important than ever to protect your family from mosquito-borne illnesses. This requires a multi-layered approach. Here’s how you can minimize risk, protect your home, and safely enjoy your outdoor spaces:
1) Stay Indoors During Peak Mosquito Activity
Mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn, especially during warm months. Whenever possible, limit outdoor activities during these hours until frost hits in late October or early November.
2) Apply Spray Repellents
Using insect repellent is one of the most effective ways to prevent mosquito bites. Look for repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE). These ingredients are proven to deter mosquitoes and reduce the likelihood of bites.
3) Wear Repellent Clothing and Opt for Long Sleeves and Pants
Repellent-treated clothing offers powerful protection. Many brands now offer apparel pre-treated with permethrin or other insecticides. You can also treat your own clothing with permethrin sprays, which protect for up to six washings.
Mosquitoes are drawn to exposed skin, so covering up can significantly reduce the risk of bites. Wearing long sleeves, long pants, socks, and closed-toe shoes limits your exposure to mosquito bites.
What to look for:
- Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants made from tightly woven, light-colored fabrics (mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors).
- Clothing with built-in insect repellent for convenience and lasting protection.
4) Eliminate Standing Water
Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Female mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water, which hatch into larvae. By removing standing water around your property, you can help break the mosquito life cycle and prevent future infestations.
Steps to eliminate standing water:
- Empty water from flowerpots, buckets, birdbaths, kiddie pools, and other containers after rain.
- Clean gutters to prevent water from pooling.
- Fix leaks in outdoor faucets and hoses that may cause puddles.
- Cover rain barrels and other water containers with tight-fitting lids or mosquito screens.
5) Spray Your Yard
Treating your yard with mosquito-repellent sprays is another essential step in keeping your outdoor space safe. Two common options are permethrin and Essentria.
- Permethrin: This synthetic chemical is highly effective at killing mosquitoes and ticks on contact. Spray it on lawns, bushes, and shrubs. Permethrin is long-lasting but should be reapplied after heavy rain or every few weeks.
- Essentria: A natural alternative containing essential oils like peppermint and rosemary that repel mosquitoes. While safer for pets and beneficial insects like bees, it requires more frequent application than chemical sprays.
