Designing a property of this scale requires careful balance. This Duxbury seaside estate was shaped to feel comfortable and welcoming on a day-to-day basis, while still accommodating large family gatherings with ease. A new pool, expanded terrace, and built-in grilling area anchor outdoor living, while a planting plan selected for salt air and coastal winds brings resilience and softness to the setting. A reworked driveway completes the transformation, improving both function and arrival.

about this property
Duxbury, MA | Located on a scenic seaside bluff, this stately home lacked a clear connection between its front and rear landscapes. Our design team addressed this by extending the main terrace and introducing a wide stone staircase that organizes the backyard along a strong central axis. The 30-foot stair links the fire pit, built-in grill, and pool while also serving as informal seating oriented toward expansive beach and horizon views. Planting complements the stonework with varied textures and restrained white blooms that reinforce cohesion without competing with the setting.
At the front of the property, the main entrance was difficult to read on approach. The driveway was widened and reshaped into a circular form that frames the home and opens views beneath an allée of dogwoods. Pea stone pressed into the asphalt softens the surface and visually bridges architecture and landscape.

a thoughtful approach
The circular driveway establishes a clear and gracious approach to the home, using carefully selected materials to balance elegance with durability. Pea stone provides a refined driving surface, while granite edging and stone accents add structure and visual rhythm. The circular form slows the pace of arrival, frames the architecture, and draws the eye toward the front entry, transforming a functional necessity into a defining landscape feature that sets the tone for the property.
pool set into the landscape
The waterfront pool was designed to feel grounded in its surroundings, with clean lines and natural materials that complement both the home and the coastal setting beyond. Stone paving extends seamlessly around the water’s edge, while low, wind-tolerant plantings soften the transition to lawn and frame open views of the shoreline. Comfortable seating is arranged to encourage quiet moments and long afternoons outdoors, creating a calm, understated retreat that feels connected to the landscape rather than placed upon it.
stone deck with a view
Interconnected stone terraces shape outdoor living around the home, guiding movement from shaded seating and dining areas down toward the pool and open lawn beyond. Broad steps, low stone walls, and carefully proportioned landings create a natural progression that feels intentional and relaxed, while durable stone surfaces tie each level together. Oriented toward sweeping water views, the layout encourages gathering, quiet reflection, and seamless transitions between indoor comfort and the coastal landscape.
a balance of stone and wood
This portion of the landscape brings together complementary stone and wood elements to create a setting that feels grounded, warm, and distinctly coastal. Low stone walls, fire features, and paving establish permanence and structure, while wood fencing and gates soften transitions and frame views toward the water. Flowering shrubs and open lawn weave between these materials, reinforcing a sense of enclosure without closing off the landscape. The result is an outdoor environment where craftsmanship and restraint work together to support everyday use and long-term durability.
